Chiropractic and ART in Markham

Traditionally Chiropractors are seen as the joint specialists, but here at Form & Function, we really pride ourselves on the diversity of manual therapy care that our Chiropractors and Sports Chiropractors provide.  We are truly ahead of the game when it comes to dynamic utilization of tools that are embedded in research.

Such tools as Active Release Technique (ART), Spinal and joint manipulations, laser therapy, Medical Acupuncture, Phonophoresis, Graston tools and Fascial Release therapy are just a handful of some of the great tools that we use to get our patients back in tip top shape.  Alongside our great diagnostic skills, we truly deliver a second to none service.

At Form & Function, our goal is to find the root cause of every complaint, and not just to mask the symptoms that it produced.  Therefore, when we find the root cause of each complaint, we can use treatments that are best fitted to tackle the problem.

Chiropractic at Form & Function

Along with the rest of the Dynamic Treatment Paradigm (DTP ) Chiropractic treatment plays an integral role in the success of many injuries by reducing symptoms at the affected joints and surrounding musculatures, fascia and nerves.

We utilize ART as one of the key treatment modalities Scroll down for more info on ART

Active Release Technique (ART®)

ART® – Active Release Technique is a specific, state of the art system of diagnosis and manual treatment for soft tissue disorders. ART® is a patented system that treats problems arising from muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerve as a result of direct traumatic injuries, repetitive strain injuries, postural strain, sports specific injuries and day-to-day stresses from the work place.

The Science of ART®

When muscle, fascia or other soft tissue are put under acute traumatic stress, micro-trauma or reduced oxygen state— scar tissue forms.  Scar tissue is dense irregular bundles of inefficient tissue that binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become inefficient and weaker, while tendons become irritated, which can result in tendinitis and entrapping the free movement of healthy nerves. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength and pain.

ART® works by releasing the level of restriction and scar tissue formation that has formed as a result of injury, overuse or even postural or ergonomic imbalances.  The tissues are worked to fix injuries within muscles, tendons, ligaments, and between nerves to allow for improved tissue texture, tension, movement, form and function.

What types of conditions are treated with ART®?

Here are some examples of what we treat typically with ART®, however, most injuries have some kind of soft tissue involvement, so many of Form & Function treatment protocols include ART®:

  • Jumpers knee
  • Shoulder Dysfunctions/Impingement
  • Temporomandibular Joint dysfunctions (Jaw pain)
  • Patello-femoral Pain Syndrome
  • Whiplash Associated Disorder
  • Post Surgical Dysfunctions
  • Repetitive Strain Disorder
  • Tennis Elbow/Golfers Elbow
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Iliotibial Band Syndrome
  • Nerve Entrapment
  • Shin Splints
  • Rotator Cuff Pain
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Low Back Pain
  • Headaches
  • Tendonitis
  • Neck Pain

What is an ART treatment like?

Every ART session is actually a combination of examination and treatment. The ART provider uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.

These treatment protocols – over 500 specific moves – are unique to ART. They allow providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient. ART is not a cookie-cutter approach.
