Moxibustion is a Traditional Chinese Medicine technique using heat generated from dried mugwort, traditionally called moxa, near selected acupuncture points or treatment areas.
At Form & Function in Markham, moxibustion may be incorporated into an individualized TCM treatment when your practitioner believes warming therapy is appropriate. Unlike a standard heating pad, moxibustion allows the practitioner to direct warmth to specific acupuncture points and targeted areas of the body.
Within Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, moxibustion is commonly associated with warming areas described as having patterns of cold, stagnation, or deficiency.
Patients commonly ask about moxibustion for concerns including:
✔ Persistent feelings of muscular or joint stiffness
✔ Lower-back discomfort
✔ Menstrual discomfort
✔ Abdominal or digestive discomfort
✔ Cold hands and feet
✔ General fatigue
✔ Symptoms that patients report worsening during cold weather
Not every patient or condition requires moxibustion. Your practitioner will determine whether it makes sense as part of your comprehensive treatment plan.
Moxibustion is frequently used as an adjunct rather than a stand-alone treatment. Depending on your initial assessment, your session may seamlessly incorporate acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, or other TCM techniques to provide the most effective care.
